Communicating Well

I shared these leadership communication tips with some at our church recently. I think these principles could help you and others you serve with to build more trust and better communication within your team and your church.

The following are four qualities of effective communication (I learned these while at a church conference where Pastor Craig Groeschel was speaking):

BE CONSISTENT – This first one deals with the church’s vision, values, and direction. We need to consistently share these so others know them and we keep evaluating whether we’re living them out or not. I write “we” intentionally. I need your help in sharing the church’s vision and strategy with others. Our vision is to help people find & follow Jesus. Our strategy is we want to do that by including, investing, and inviting others.

BE SPECIFIC – This one has to do with goals, who is doing what, and when it will be done. In churches, there is often too much talk and too much vagueness about what and who should be doing what and when it will happen.

BE REAL – This comes into play when there is a problem or mistake. When there is a mistake, admit it. When there is a problem, acknowledge and solve it. When you aren’t sure about something, admit it.

BE PASSIONATE – This speaks to how we communicate. If something is important to God, it should be important to us. That being said, we should share things God puts on our hearts in passionate ways for Him and His glory.

God cares about our communication and He cares how we communicate with others.
Let’s communicate well. We should strive to do it well because the One we follow is worthy of our best!
